Supplements for Muscle-Building and Toning Workouts

  1. Supplements for Muscle-Building and Toning Workouts

Many people want to gain muscle mass so that they are better able to perform daily tasks.  Even more people want to tone up those love handles. Muscle-building and toning workouts are designed to make us function better (and become more attractive) by encouraging the growth and the effectiveness of those focused muscle groups. Two supplements are especially valuable for building muscle.

The first is rather obvious: protein. Muscles are made of protein, so if you want to build muscles, you need to consume a lot of protein. Some proteins are better than others due to body absorption methods, but the go-to is and continues to be in the form of “whey” protein. Studies of whey protein found it to be effective at increasing strength, lean body mass, and anabolic responses in the muscles. For those who are lactose-intolerant, whey protein isolate has the same benefits, but without pesky lactose.

The second muscle-building supplement is creatine. Creatine occurs naturally in our body, particularly near muscles and skeletal tissue. Creatine helps muscles store energy and increase mass, which allows you to work harder—something all our Olathe personal trainers love to see. Studies show that short-term doses of creatine can increase muscle mass and power by up to 15%, in addition to a bunch of other benefits.

Magnum Limitless is a supplement that combines whey protein isolate with creatine for a one-two punch. At SunPoint Fitness, we work exclusively with Magnum Nutraceuticals because they’re the very best on the market, and Magnum Limitless is one of our favorites.

Supplements for Endurance Workouts

  1. Supplements for Endurance Workouts

Endurance exercises, such as running and rowing, are great for getting healthy; but did you know these exercises are also great for stress relief? The rise in popularity of 5Ks, 10Ks, and marathons show that the meditative benefits of distance exercise and that famed “runner’s high” are attracting people in droves. We know what you’re wondering: How can so many people enjoy the exhaustion that comes with a long run?

One thing that causes you to fatigue after long exercise sessions is a rising amount of tryptophan in your brain. (Yes, this is the stuff that makes you sleepy after your big Thanksgiving turkey dinner.) To help you get the most out of your endurance workouts and reduce that fatigue, take a healthy dose of Branched-Chain Amino Acids, or BCAAs.

BCAAs compete with the tryptophan for the love of your brain’s receptors, so supplementing with them can altogether block tryptophan from turning you into a couch potato before you cross the finish line. Research shows that BCAAs can diminish muscle breakdown that occurs as the result of endurance exercise. Reducing this breakdown allows you to be like the Six Billion Dollar Man, but without the sci-fi appendages.

When you visit our personal training team in Olathe, KS, we might recommend a supplement like Magnum DNA, which contains three different BCAAs: valine, leucine, and isoleucine. If you’re training for a race, make sure you’re gaining the long-term effects of BCAAs for a stronger performance and faster lap times.

  1. Supplements for Fat-Burning Workouts

So, you ate a little too much pizza one day, and now your body has decided to save the extra calories in the form of fat. No big deal. The best way to force your body to rid itself of that fat is to spend more energy than you take in, which forces your body to dip into those reserves. You can do that by eating less, workout out more, or by taking supplements that increase the rate at which your body burns energy (aka. metabolism).

The easiest to increase your metabolism is by consuming small amounts of caffeine. Studies show that caffeine increases metabolism and leads to modest weight loss compared to a placebo. Still, too much caffeine can cause a high heart rate, insomnia, and that not-so-good jittery feeling, so be careful with those cups of coffee and green tea.

For caffeine delivery that’s a bit more sophisticated and catered to your body, the Magnum Heat Accelerated supplement might be for you. It combines caffeine from coffee, tea, and other sources, with green tea extract and additional fat-fighting ingredients. Ask our personal trainers about proper dosages.
